Bill Schwartz

has just been named the presiding judge of Jackson County, as reported in the Southern Illinoisan. Here's an excerpt:

A Bellwood native, Schwartz received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He earned his law degree in 1976 as a member of the SIU School of Law's charter class.

Schwartz has slowly moved up the ranks as a judge. He started as an associate judge, appointed by a circuit judge [sic--actually by vote of all the circuit judges]. Then he was appointed as a circuit judge before being elected in 1992, and now he's the senior judge in Jackson County.

"The chief judge had enough faith and trust in me to make me presiding judge of the county," Schwartz said.
